Immediately on “Didn’t I,” the latest song from Boy Scouts, Taylor Vicks reveals that she doesn’t have any answers, only her own experience and the imprints left in her head. On the second single from the Oakland-based singer-songwriter’s forthcoming album Wayfinder, Vicks thinks spaciously, with time getting away from her. Her voice sways alongside pedal steel and a Hammond organ. Later, cello emphasizes a spark that curiosity sets aflame in our brains. “Didn’t I” is a swooning folk ballad that finds comfort in not having all the answers, giving us reasons to live, to seek them out.

In reference to the gentle single, Vicks said: “Why are we alive? Is there a point to any of this? Have I done this before? I was thinking about these questions like that, just playing with these ideas and being curious. I lost that curiosity for many years, and it came back to me in the last year. I started to wonder about these types of things again. It feels better to have curiosity for life.”

In the video directed by Lucy Sandler, Vicks employs that curiosity, traveling to places around the Bay Area, including the Pelican Inn, Bolinas Ridge, and the Alpine Dam. At one point, she befriends a cow, which makes me really jealous! Later, she finds an abandoned boat. Life is simple and strange and full of curiosities.
