It’s hard to tell if Twitter, the mecca of unwanted opinions, normalized sharing such thoughts or if it just helped highlight an irritating habit that many of us give in to. Today, Ghent-based duo Charlotte Adigéry and Bolis Pupul have shared their hypnotic new single “Thank You,” which is a biting soundtrack for all that extra lip service that no one really asked for. The single was co-written and co-produced by Soulwax. In a statement about the track, Adigéry called it “a cheeky and cynical revenge for all the unwanted, unsolicited opinions some people generously offer us.”

The sardonic single has a similar electric energy that brought the duo into the spotlight with their 2019 EP Zandoli. Adigéry’s vocals are saccharine and posh as she beams, “No, no, no, no, really, thank you.” “Yeah, you’re right, this doesn’t look good on me,” she intones later, wielding the ostensibly helpful insult only to hurl it back with an I-don’t-give-a-shit tone. The background is dotted with a bouncy bass melody as zappy synth embellishments start to trickle in. Whether Adigéry is pointing out the microagressions about her appearance or one’s preference for her earlier work, “Thank You” is a thrilling reassertion of her creative agency.
