Following her excellent and devastating 2020 album color theory, Soccer Mommy returned this year with a new single “rom com 2004.” It was a hopelessly romantic song rusted in reverb that collapsed and snapped back together like a marionette, serving to capture the swell and depression of one’s thoughts lost in the throes of desire, pondering the possibilities of declaring one’s love. Now the single has gotten a new life with a remix from Kero Kero Bonito for Adult Swim’s annual singles series.

Re-dubbed “Rom Com 2021,” the spritely synth-pop trio have imbued “rom com 2004” with a bobbing drumbeat and playful keyboard melodies. At the beginning, SM’s original vocals are chopped up, followed by new verses from Sarah Midori Perry who sings about lonely winter strolls and love’s importance. We were very excited to be invited to work on ‘Rom Com 2021,’” Kero Kero Bonito said in a press release. “Our contributions were inspired by Bridget Jones’ Diary, late summer, and U.K. Garage vocal manipulation.”
