Paul Thomas Anderson is returning with his latest epic creation Licorice Pizza later this year. The ’70s-based movie stars HAIM sister Alana Haim—which makes sense, since Anderson has worked on several of the group’s music videos—and is a coming-of-age-story with co-lead Cooper Hoffman (Philip Seymour Hoffman’s son). It also features Tom Waits, Bradley Cooper, Sean Penn, Benny Safdie, and Maya Rudolph.
According to its logline, the film is “the story of Alana Kane and Gary Valentine growing up, running around and falling in love in the San Fernando Valley, 1973. Written and Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the film tracks the treacherous navigation of first love.” And although the use of “treacherous” is enticing, the new trailer seems to be much more informative of the feature’s chaotic nature. The clip, which is set to David Bowie’s “Life on Mars?,” is quite fun. It features Waits, Penn, and Cooper all yelling dramatically at some point. The latter even smashes some cars!
