2014. Thom Yorke’s “Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes” header

This morning we opened our browsers to the unexpected news that Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke released a brand-new solo album titled Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes. Even if you don’t like surprises, this is a pretty good one.

Yorke is no stranger to releasing music in unconventional ways, having notoriously self-released Radiohead’s In Rainbows for a “pay what you want” price back in 2007. With 2011’s King of Limbs, Radiohead also shared an app where listeners could experience the music in interactive form.

For his second solo effort (following 2006’s The Eraser), Yorke has uploaded Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes to BitTorrent where fans can pay $6 to download the bundle. Along with the album drop, he and producer Nigel Godrich shared a little note behind their method of release which you can read below, explaining that “it could be an effective way of handing some control of Internet commerce back to the people who are creating the work.”

You can get Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes at BitTorrent now, where you’ll also find Yorke’s newly released video for “A Brain in a Bottle.”
