Shortly before the pandemic hit, Puerto Rican garage rockers Davila 666 called an end to their seven-year hiatus with one of their rowdiest tunes to date, with a string of reunion shows to follow. While we’ve yet to hear a full album of new material, it appears as if bandleader AJ Davila may have a solo project prepped to drop before then, having shared the single “El Mar” over the summer followed up by the track “Superstar” today.

While its predecessor felt rooted in the early 2010s garage rock scene (Black Lips’ Cole Alexander has a feature on the tune), “Superstar” has a much rawer sound, one that feels as if Davila wrote and even recorded it in isolation while wrestling with his demons. In fact, that appears to be the exact theme the Spanish-language, acoustic-driven track covers. “‘Superstar’ is a song about breaking up the ultimate love affair,” he explains. “It’s a letter and farewell full of much pain, loneliness, and sadness. It’s the process of being in an emotional crisis full of vices and addictions that spirals, but always with the hope of being able to recover that pure love that can only be observed from a distance. It’s the lost sailor who searches for his way home with the light of the stars in the sky.”

Watch the video for the single below, and anticipate more from AJ soon.
