The King Khan & BBQ Show have been making records like every night is a Saturday night since the ’90s when they were in the raucous band Spaceshits together. Their M.O. since seems to be: put out an awesome record, play crazy shows, get in a fight, break up, and repeat. Now back together for the first time in five years, the combative partiers are here to break hearts and melt faces. If you’re new to their thing, KK&BBQ engage in restoring the glory of early rock and roll by filling songs with equal parts dirt, doo-wop, grime, and garage rock. The pair are at their best when creating a Coasters/Shangri-Las/Dirtbombs combo (“Ocean of Love,” “Alone Again”), but barely hit any marks when diving into their—literally crap-obsessed—SoCal ’80s-hardcore tracks (“D.F.O.,” “Zen Machines”). No one really expects a cohesive album from these guys, so Bad News Boys makes for a riveting diversion in fits and starts.
