I’m not exactly sure whether we ever got to the bottom of the mystery of what “bubblegrunge” is (will Spotify ever release an official statement?) but I would venture to guess that it has something to do with pop’s current infatuation with Nirvana, nu metal aesthetics, and Travis Barker guest spots. Yet this past summer’s release from Baby FuzZ explored corners even bubblier and grungier than what’s the norm on the radio, with the rapid-paced, “It’s the End of the World as We Know It”–esque verses and, um, frank subject matter of “We’re All Gonna Die!!!” providing a decent primer on Welcome to the Future (Season 1)’s juxtaposition of playful sounds and dire subject matter.

Today the project is sharing an appropriately eventful video for the track, featuring a cartoon figure struggling to make their way down a highway as human body parts shoot past them. It’s grotesque in the same way Brandon Lowry’s lyrics are, with the squiggling cartoon imagery providing a visual parallel to the quick delivery of often ridiculous fatal scenarios.

“The video was constructed by Studio Linguine, a stop motion animation and production studio based in LA,” Lowry explains. “Directed by Nick Cinelli, the video follows a hell-raising baby as they race through life in a car in a literal human race. I wanted to make something fun and gnarly that matched the energy of the song. The baby is like a typical representation of everyone ripping through life and just trying to avoid wrecking. It’s also a little nod to me trying to tour in my weird van.”
