The recent and fairly prolific musical output of Robert Tilden through his moniker BOYO has quickly established the LA native as a talented writer of soundtracks for winter nights in, with the one-two punch of Where Have All My Friends Gone? and Alone Together in Los Angeles specializing in fuzzy lo-fi frequently incorporating acoustic guitar and psychedelic flourishes. His latest release, though, is jarringly summer-ready—Echoes Like Memories, which was announced today and will arrive this Friday—leans into those psychedelic touches hinted at on prior records with an emphasis on funk and upbeat synth-pop.
The first preview of the record, album closer “Special,” is marked by Tilden’s slightly distorted falsetto, smooth keys, and a dance-y sensibility. “I wrote ‘Special’ after my mom played me Lionel Richie and The Commodores and Prince on a drive when I was an early teen,” Tilden shares. “It was always floating around in my head but never found the right home until I got better at recording and sat down to make what became these new songs. I wanted it to sound like a song Daft Punk would sample and make way crazier.”
