It was a little odd a few months back when rumors began circulating that David Lynch had a feature-length film in his pocket ready to premiere at an upcoming film festival considering the fact that we’ve all kept a pretty sharp eye on the 76-year-old filmmaker since he took to his YouTube page at the beginning of the pandemic to consistently deliver his famous weather reports among other dispatches from his workshop/“theater.” I think we all realized how ridiculous that thought was when he revealed that he was currently teaching a course at his daughter’s school called “farm.”

Yet today’s message from Camp Lynch was a somber one—this morning we learned of the passing of Lynch-universe mainstay and innovator of dream pop Julee Cruise, who died yesterday at the age of 65. Her music can be heard throughout the Lynch canon, from Blue Velvet onwards, even getting spotlighted in the feature-length performance film Industrial Symphony No. 1, starring Wild at Heart leads Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern.

“It might be a good time to appreciate all the good music she made,” Lynch shared this morning, leaning over his camera at angle we’ve gotten used to in recent years, “and remember her as being a great musician, great singer, and great human being.” Plenty of that great music has been re-released through Sacred Bones Records, which you can check out here.
