Next month, Deca is slated to head out on tour with Homeboy Sandman, a fellow East Coast emcee who’s unwaveringly level-headed bars arrive in stark contrast to the anxiety-laced lyrics that populate them. But before he preaches the gospel of his Smoking Gun LP—which he released at the tail end of May—across the US, he’s highlighting one of that album’s tracks with an animated visual that helps illustrate some of the lyrics jammed into its tight two-and-half minutes.
“Tuning,” a two-part track featuring an abrupt beat switch, Deca describes as being “about finding some measure of peace in extremely turbulent times,” before the change-up brings a lyrical shift to a focus on creation stories. To bring these ideas to life, the rapper enlisted the like-minded visual artist Alemsah Firat to endow the track with a colorful, imaginative animation.
“I found Alemsah’s work and connected with her through Instagram,” he explains. “I think we’re kind of kindred spirits as far as our use of symbolism, and the type of imagery in our art, and after checking out a few of the shorts on her website I knew she’d be a perfect fit. It’s been a pleasure working with her and I’m hoping to collaborate with her again soon.”Check out the video below. Pre-orders for vinyl copies of the LP—which are scheduled to ship in November—are up now on Deca’s Bandcamp.
