We’re about a month out from Cayucas’ latest studio album Blue Summer turning two years old, and the duo of brothers Zach and Ben Yudin are celebrating the anniversary by being brought on a North American tour to open for Echo & the Bunnymen (who are celebrating the slightly more significant anniversary of 40 years as a moody post-punk unit). As if their setlist wasn’t already robust enough with tropicalia-scented, upbeat indie-rock tunes, Cayucas are introducing another one today with the one-off single “Sayulita”—an ode to a Mexican town they’ve never visited.

“Something about this place ‘Sayulita’ we were hearing about…it had a nice ring to it,” Zach Yudin shares. “Sayulita is a place we’ve never been, no plans to go, but lyrically I like to create a sort of mythical place in my mind that encompasses the mood. The song has a sort of Eagle-esque, ‘Hotel California’ quality to it—imagery of waking up on the beach after a long night sipping cerveza with the goal of ‘fixing a broken heart.’ But it’s really about the idea of going somewhere in your mind. Even if you’re not actually there it takes you away for a while.”

Originally penned around 2016 following the release of the pair’s sophomore LP Dancing at the Blue Lagoon, the track was little more than a guitar riff (and the tentative title “I Fell Asleep in Sayulita”) before the influence struck and a siesta-primed single was born. Hear it below, and catch the band’s upcoming dates here.
