Named after a song from San Pedro, CA punk legends Minutemen, This Ain't No Picnic was one of the first festivals from LA powerhouse concert promoter Goldenvoice, launched the same year they debuted Coachella in 1999. The inaugural Picnic fest—which ran until 2002 in Irvine, CA—featured an indie-punk heavy lineup, including Sonic Youth, Sleater-Kinney, Sunny Day Real Estate, and, naturally, Minutemen co-founder Mike Watt.
In a nod to the fest's origins, Watt returned to the revised festival—which took place over two days this weekend in Pasadena, CA—along with one of the most impressive festival lineups this year, including headliners LCD Soundsystem and The Strokes, Kathleen Hanna's reunited electro-punk trio Le Tigre, SoCal greats Sparks and Circle Jerks, hip-hop eccentrics slowthai and Earl Sweatshirt, UK indie stars Wet Leg and IDLES, and Pasadena's own Phoebe Bridgers, among many others.
