Pop fairy queen Caroline Polachek released a new single yesterday called "Sunset." She'd been performing the song live while on tour with Dua Lipa, but now we get to hear the masterfully produced song that recalls wine-tinged twilight rendezvous.
Since 2019's Pang, Polachek has kept our hunger satiated with the singles "Bunny Is a Rider" and "Billions." "Sunset," which was co-produced with Sega Bodega, continues her escapist streak of whimsy with delicately plucked Spanish guitar and Polachek's operatic vocals that could lift you several feet off the ground—or carry you off into the sunset. "Sunset" is as captivating as a romance novel; Polachek and Bodega capture that grandiose intensity where giving into an emotional fantasy can feel like a sublime final chapter.
“Resolution is so rare in life, but music is unnaturally full of it," Polachek said of the single. "A sunset is the biggest pop cliche ever, because it's a perfect resolution. Ennio Morricone passed away a few months before Salvador [Sega Bodega] and I started 'Sunset,' and the folkloric, epic tone of the Spaghetti Western sunset played on my mind. I wanted an operatic chorus with no lyrics, but salted with some very real disillusionment: past all the distraction, dead ends, and false promises of the world is the love we too often take for granted. That's my sunset.”
