It’s been a few years since we’ve heard from Hibou, the solo project of former Craft Spells touring drummer Peter Michel who uses the outlet to push forward the nostalgic dream-pop sounds of that band (which have accumulated an additional layer of nostalgia, as Michel’s music viscerally recalls the early-’00s-era Captured Tracks bedroom-pop roster). Yet today he’s back with a new single that arrives ahead of the Arc EP, which we can expect out January 13.
As the first taste of the EP, “Night Fell” invokes the Tumblr-friendly floral album covers of a decade ago with its merging of ’80s-by-way-of-’10s post-punk guitar and dream-pop vocals. “It’s exhilarating to be releasing new Hibou music after spending so much of the last several years concentrating on my folk project,” Michel shares of the new LP, which was recorded in various spots around Paris. “‘Night Fell’ feels like the perfect song to kick things back into gear. Packed tightly into this track is my return to the lush textured melodies and breezy blend of gossamer vocals that comprise Hibou.”
