When we caught up with FIDLAR four years ago to discuss the experimental turns their 2019 LP Almost Free took, Zac Carper put the new direction in pretty blunt terms: “We got fuckin’ bored,” he told us. Fast-forward to last August and the West Coast punk trio were returning to their noisy roots with the one-off single “FSU,” a track that they’ve announced today will appear alongside other recent releases “Sand on the Beach” and “Taste the Money” on a new EP titled That’s Life, which is set for release on March 17 at the onset of an Australasian tour.
Meanwhile, the band is sharing a fourth cut from the six-track EP titled “Centipede,” a callback to their tastefully abrasive early material as filtered through a clear reverence for late-’90s/early-’00s pop rock, with Adam Schlesinger’s witty lyrics coming to mind during the calm verses tucked between the heavy choruses. “She’s my oasis, but she treats me like I’m a blur,” Carper wearily sings of a relationship fractured by the vocalist’s extensively self-documented misanthropy. Here’s hoping he gets his 100 gecs shirt back if things don’t work out.
