Back in April we got a lot of new information from Julian Casablancas’ side-project The Voidz, though unfortunately almost all of it was too cryptic to make heads or tails of. The gist of it, though, was that the band was announcing a three-night residency at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall from June 15-17, and that the event would be the most epic night ever and a cosmic experience and a whole bunch of other superlatives that it may be hard to fact-check.

With those dates fast approaching, the band is sharing a new single called “Prophecy of the Dragon,” which follows 2018’s Virtue LP. In true Voidz fashion the track is hard to pin down, with familiarly Strokesian guitar riffs mixing with some truly heavy-metal shredding and, at one point, a little Auto-Tune experimentation. Luckily Julian cleared things up with a characteristically lucid statement:

“The track started with a very simple question... what would it feel like if God whispered into your ear ‘you are my most magnificent creature.’ What would that feeling sound like? What would it’s bassline be? With that, [guitarist] Beardo blew The Voidz conch shell, and we assembled from the various corners of the earth to which we had been summoned for previous quests. From the deserts of the Sahara, to the truck stops of the midwest—we reunited in California to answer this question.

the response?

...from the fiery bones of eternity,
the dragon's voice, awakened after millennia in waiting, spewed forth a sonic fist of impertinence
in
the shape of a New Pirate anthem,
where nothing is what it seems, nor is it otherwise:

—Prophecy Of The Dragon.”

Got it. Check out the new track below, and grab tickets to their SF residency (expanded to include June 14, which is currently the only date not sold out) right here.
