With the reveal of the inaugural Bleached Festival this year, residents of San Diego must be thrilled at the prospect of no longer having to make the two-hour drive to the Indio desert for a weekend of wall-to-wall exciting alt-rock and nu-R&B. The new fest is slated to set up in the city’s Waterfront Park downtown on August 5 and 6, promising “a laid back uniquely Southern California summer experience” that “connect[s] the worlds of alternative, indie-pop, and new-age R&B for a washed-out weekend for those looking to kick back and enjoy some of the moment’s most celebrated live acts.”
Such live acts include Caroline Polachek, Yves Tumor, Remi Wolf, Ethel Cain, Omar Apollo, Channel Tres, Surf Curse, Dayglow, and Aluna, with many more up-and-coming names taking the stage over the two-day period. In spotlighting the best of what’s next, the fest will also feature a set from Blondshell, Sabrina Teitelbaum’s hooky, grungy indie rock project with a recent self-titled debut worthy of our best albums of the year (so far) rankings. While the rousing guitar riffs spanning Blondshell are far from laid back, Teitelbaum has quickly proven worthy of sharing the stage with the aforelisted artists largely responsible for the buzz surrounding nearly every notable music fest across the country this summer.
Ahead of the upcoming festivities, we asked Teitelbaum to share a playlist reflecting what she’s been jamming on tour to get her pumped before shows. From fellow Bleached Fest performer Yves Tumor to fellow breaking buzz-band Militarie Gun to funk legends Funkadelic, check out her picks below.
Bully, “Change Your Mind”
This is my favorite song right now. This whole album is my #1 on tour right now.
Militarie Gun, “Do It Faster”
I saw Militarie Gun at SXSW this year and fell in love. They’re amazing live.
The National, “Don’t Swallow the Cap”
I saw The National play this album [Trouble Will Find Me] live at Prospect Park when I was 16. I have a lot of nostalgia for that show and this song in particular.
Phantogram, “When I’m Small”
Phantogram opened for The National at that show and this was one of my faves at the time.
Blur, “Good Song”
I need some happy/sunny songs on tour and I love this one right now.
Funkadelic, “Can You Get to That”
This is another one of my sunny songs that makes me feel good before playing.
The Strokes, “Eternal Summer”
Another happy song…
Paramore, “All I Wanted”
This is one of my favorite vocal performances of all time.
Juliana Hatfield, “Universal Heart-Beat”
Someone showed me this song recently and it’s the newest thing I listen to before shows.
Turnstile, “Real Thing”
Because Turnstile, duh.
Yves Tumor, “Parody”
I’m most excited to see Yves Tumor play [at Bleached]! I love this new album so much.
