Rock legend and Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis has returned with another new single from his fifth solo album, What Do We Do Now, out February 2 via Sub Pop. On the pop-leaning “Right Behind You,” slushy drums provide a backdrop for campfire acoustic guitar strums and bright piano chords. Mascis’ signature near-whine gives the song a yearning, nostalgic energy.
What Do We Do Now was recorded at his studio Bisquiteen in Western Massachusetts, and is J’s first solo album that features full drum and electric leads, although the rhythm parts are still all acoustic. What Do We Do Now features guest musicians including Ken Mauri of The B-52’s on keys and Matthew “Doc” Dunn on steel guitar.
