Have you recovered from the punny brilliance of my headline? If so, here’s some more information on the above statement: Lorde has covered Talking Heads’ cover of Al Green’s 1974 gospel hit “Take Me to the River” for A24 Music’s compilation Everyone’s Getting Involved: A Tribute to Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense. The project comes in celebration of the recent re-release of the concert film and the 40th anniversary of its accompanying soundtrack album.
Though Lorde wasn’t even close to being alive when the show was filmed, she has the temerity to take on the classic track. Just kidding, she does an excellent job. People of all ages can do whatever they want! Lorde’s version is built around bubbling synths and a real ’80s drum groove that gives the song serious Midnight Oil vibes. I would love to hear a whole album of Lorde cosplaying in this strange corner of radio-rock history.
Check out the track below, and stream it here. Lorde also wrote a note about her cover, which you can view below the video.
