It’s technically been four years since we’ve gotten a Deafheaven album, but it’s been seven years since we’ve gotten a very Deafheaven-y Deafheaven album. In the time since Ordinary Corrupt Human Love dropped in 2018, the band has celebrated 10 years together with their first live album and followed that up with an experiment in largely de-metalicized shoegaze with 2021’s Infinite Granite. Now, on March 28, the band will return with Lonely People with Power (aptly titled for the unfolding presidential administration), a new album that promises a return to black metal as heard on the thrashy lead single “Magnolia.”

Clocking in at a relatively tight four-and-a-half minutes, the new track introduces Deafheaven’s Roadrunner Records era with a bang. Based on the tracklist there’s still no shortage of experimentation here, as signaled by guest vocal credits for Paul Banks of Interpol (for whom Deafheaven was recently hand-picked to open on the band’s Antics anniversary tour) and Boy Harsher’s Jae Matthews. Check out the video for “Magnolia” below, and pre-order the record here. The band also promises to announce tour dates in support of the record soon.
