Colorfield Records engineer/producer Pete Min and studio drummer Joey Waronker have shared “King King,” the title track from their new collaborative album out July 11 via Colorfield. Featuring Nicole McCabe on alto, the track is a mesmerizing electronic-pop cut with playful synth teases and stunning color from McCabe. Waronker keeps the groove steady, allowing his collaborators to move freely throughout the tune.
”‘King King’ is the most traditional ‘song’ on the record,” Min says. “It started out with Joey getting some crazy sequenced keyboards going. I filled out some of the harmony. At that point we got Daphne Chen to put some strings on it and then Nicole McCabe to finish it off with saxes.”
Adds Waronker: “I went into all of these sessions with a very open mind and with the intention of doing stuff without any set agendas or goals or second guessing. Then we step away for a while and come back to see if anything sounds good! When it works, like this track, it’s very rewarding. Pete certainly took it to the next level with his additions, as well as Daphne’s string arrangement and Nicole’s deep musicianship.”
