You know the deal: another year, another slightly more-insane Osees record. Following the buzzing synths of last year’s egg-punk opus SORCS 80, John Dwyer is returning with what is shaping up to be a collection of more straightforward punk clearly inspired by the tremendous idiocy on full display every day of 2025, at least as far back as mid-January. The latest single, “Abomination,” takes aim at war with a video that serves as “a love letter to Dr. Strangelove” and “a big fuck-you to war mongers everywhere.” The relentless two-minute cut barely breathes as Dwyer’s yells are met by pounding guitar, frantic percussion, and wonky synths. “There is no righteous war; there is only war.”
According to Dwyer, the album came together after a few months of improvisation with the band after sharing composition ideas he’d written. As may be evident by the rage at the heart of the new single, though, the primary fuel was political. “It came together easily because it’s impossible not to have the state of our country permeate your waking life,” he explains. “It seeps into the unconscious, and then it’s in your dreams, too. So it solidifies in song if you’re a musician. The frantic vibe of the album is a reflection of fast-as-fuck way half our country has rolled over for fascistic behaviors.”
The album was recorded by Dwyer alongside Enrique Tena Padilla and Mario Ramirez, with whom the band has collaborated before. “They both get it, and they know what I want,” Dwyer shares. “Enrique has balls for days and is down for whatever stupid idea I want to throw around, which is more than I can say for a lot of producers or even engineers I’ve worked with. Mario is like the quiet guy in a Kung Fu movie. He’s always paying attention and seeing what I usually miss, and you never know what he’s gonna do in the final fight. He also lights a real motherfucker of a bon fire.”
In further homage to Kubrick, the new track’s John Valle–directed video also takes influence from a more cultish film reference point, which also lent the clip its star. “We were lucky enough to line up with John, who had a grip of old Troma video prosthetics and a great idea. He smashed this one out of the park under time constraints and duress and still managed to get Lloyd fucking Kaufman to star in it. We are blessed with the man’s continued virility and sense of humor.”
