Youth Lagoon (aka Trevor Powers) gets by with a little help from his friends—or, more specifically, one friend, who sports a blue suit and a creepy golden mask.
In the video for his new track “Highway Patrol Stun Gun,” Powers cavorts through New York with his disguised pal (or servant?) in tow, drinking milkshakes, going bowling, playing basketball, and generally just looking cool—or, as cool as you can look next to a menacing extra from the Eyes Wide Shut cult. Even with all the lighthearted silliness, though, their relationship is still able to strike an emotive chord.

“Highway Patrol Stun Gun” is a soft piano ballad that transitions into a danceable, melodic pop track. It follows “The Knower” as the second single from Youth Lagoon’s upcoming third record Savage Hills Ballroom.
Here’s an excerpt from what Powers told The Fader about the song and video:
For me [the concept of the video] was this idea of having this extension of yourself. We go down these life paths and we feel like we’re always alone, but we have those different aspects of our personality that are essentially grounding us; we’re not quite alone, because we have our spirit. It was that idea, combined with the idea of losing someone and having them still be alive throughout your day to day—because I think that’s a very real thing. Anyone who’s experienced any sort of loss, you know you go out on a windy day you feel the wind on your skin and you feel like they’re still there.
Savage Hills Ballroom is out September 25 on Fat Possum.
