When we caught up with Austin-based neo-psych duo Dorio at the beginning of the year, members Chad Doriocourt and Rachel Rascoe were expressing their adoration for deepcut CDs from the ’90s and ’00s—the inspiration for their single “Make My World.” What we didn’t know at the time was that the track would appear on their next full-length, Super Love 3, which sees the pair fully immersed in the analog fantasies of the late 20th century from the perspective of the 21st century, when the imperfections in the medium, it turns out, are something we miss.
With the record dropping over the summer, we invited Doriocourt and Rascoe (along with keyboardist Clare Drummond) to perform a track from Super Love 3 in their native Austin for “Neighborhoods.” The song they chose was “Everyday Feels Like Tomorrow,” which they perform as a lovely acoustic duet, while the setting for the video they landed on was the nearby Sparky Pocket Park. “The same week we needed to get together and make this live video, Austin filmmaker Nick Stoner reached out to us out of the blue about needing to make a live video for one of his film classes,” Doriocourt shares of the filming experience. “It was crazy-perfect timing, and he did such an amazing job that he ended up making another music video for our song ‘Panasonic No. 1.’ We really like his use of bright colors and the way he captured the park atmosphere.”
“We recorded this on a slightly rainy, gray day at Sparky Pocket Park a few blocks from our house,” Rascoe adds, noting the eye-catching wall art they used as a backdrop, which was designed by sculptor Berthold Haas, father of actor Lukas Haas (you know, the kingpin from Brick and the patient from the “Welcome to the Black Parade” video). “It’s this teeny tiny park named for its past life as an electrical substation. I like that you can hear birds and trucks driving by on 38th Street. People stick little treasures in the rock wall, which reminds me of a Catholic grotto, and which Chad thinks is more nautical because of the seashells.”
