Hot off the release of the final season of Stranger Things, and ahead of her induction into the Hunger Games universe, Maya Hawke returns today with a new single called “Devil You Know” that introduces her upcoming fourth album, Maitreya Corso. The track bounces back and forth between “O Superman”–esque vocoder and bouncy, nearly rapped verses, all backed by a bedroom-folk instrumental built on piano and handclaps. “‘Devil You Know’ is about trying to keep ambition and greed out of the creative process,” Hawke shared of the new track. “This album generally is about learning to protect the precious from the poisonous. Protect creation from pride. Protect love from control. Protect collaboration from jealousy.”
Maitreya Corso serves as Hawke’s second album written and recorded with her partner, Christian Lee Hutson, and also sees her reteaming with producer and multi-instrumentalist Benjamin Lazar Davis. Between the Laurie Anderson homage and the Buddhist-inspired album title, the single is the perfect promo for Hawke’s appearance at tomorrow night’s Tibet House Benefit.
