The breakout success of 2023’s Everyone’s Crushed led to plenty of opportunities for the duo Water From Your Eyes, including but not limited to a label partnership with Matador Records and, consequently, and opening slot for labelmates Interpol at a comically large outdoor gig in Mexico City. With all that momentum, the band’s Nate Amos returned to his decade-running solo project This Is Lorelei with an equally monumental album the following year with Box for Buddy, Box for Star, which has proven to be a gift that keeps on giving. After re-releasing the record last April with a handful of bonus cuts, and tapping into the Lorelei vaults back in December for Holo Boy’s reworked versions of earlier tracks, Amos returns today with news of a super deluxe version of BfB,BfS, scheduled to drop April 17 via Double Double Whammy.
Adding to the previous version’s slate of covers from Snail Mail, MJ Lenderman, and Amos’ own father and sister are seven more reworkings by peers including SASAMI, Waxahatchee, Momma, Tim Heidecker, and fantasy of a broken heart in collaboration with Jeff Tweedy. Today, though, we get to hear what is undoubtedly the focal point of the release: Hayley Williams and producer Daniel James (a.k.a. the newly minted duo Power Snatch) take on This Is Lorelei’s “Perfect Hand.” The interpretation is reverently stripped-back in a bedroom-pop sort of way, slowly building to a full harmony-rich bed of sound midway through.
