The songs of Toronto-based artist Lia Pappas-Kemps tend to exist in the space between classic songwriter fare and more modern bedroom-pop titans, and her newly released debut album Winged demonstrates the balance she’s able to achieve between introspection and full-venue bombast. All 10 songs suggest a lyricist and composer far more mature than her 21 years on Earth—it somehow feels like a full-circle moment for her teen years rather than the start of a prolific songwriting career.

With the idea of “full-circle moments” in mind, Pappas-Kemps recorded a “Neighborhoods” session for us from her hometown of Toronto where she performed the last song on the record, “How do I get to you?,” and the first, “The Hunches.” Going along with this theme, she even recorded the performance outside of her childhood bedroom. “I’ve written so many songs looking out this window, so it feels like a particularly special spot for me,” she shares. “These two songs are two sides of a coin in my mind—the former being a song about desperately wanting someone to want you the way you do, and the latter is asking for forgiveness for being perhaps too flippant about a relationship.”
