At the beginning of July, Wolf Alice announced that they’d be celebrating the one-year anniversary of their latest record, The Clearing, with an EP made up of three B-sides from that album’s recording session. While the news arrived alongside the release of the first of those songs, “Gospel Oak,” it’s probably the latest track to be shared from the collection that fans are most eager to hear: a cover of The Roches’ 1979 folk-pop hit “Hammond Song,” featuring backing vocals from Sunflower Bean’s Julia Cumming and Canadian songwriter Bria Salmena.
“We love this song by The Roches, the guitar work and the vocal treatment, we actually referenced in Blue Weekend but it stuck around as something that inspired us for The Clearing too,” shared Ellie Rowsell of her band’s harmonic cover. “Recording in LA, where both Bria and Julia were living, it just seemed like a really fun thing to do to learn those harmonies and sing them with two of our favorite singers.”
Check out their cover below, and expect the full B-sides collection to drop August 21.
