What better time than Valentine’s Day weekend for She Wants Revenge to make their long-awaited return? The dourly romantic darkwave duo have kept things on hold since the release of their third album back in 2011, with a few recent reunion sets and a solo EP from frontman Justin Warfield slowly getting the gears back in motion. Now, after dropping a slate of unreleased material earlier this year on their 20th anniversary reissue of their self-titled debut, The Loved is set to be released on February 12.
Before then, the duo is sharing the record’s classically SWR lead single “Black Wax/Our Love,” a morbid, tunneling post-punk number that very nearly picks up where the project left off (though maybe with more cowbell). “We’ve always been fascinated by the contradictions in love: How something can be beautiful and destructive at the same time, and how you can know something isn’t good for you and still find yourself drawn to it,” multi-instrumentalist Adam Bravin explained. “There’s a certain darkness in ‘Black Wax,’ but there’s also an energy and a sense of defiance that we love. It feels like a natural evolution of what SWR has always been about, without trying to recreate something we’ve already done.”
