Next year marks 10 years since Tashaki Miyaki dropped their debut album of original material, which followed two full-length collections of dream-pop covers of everything from a then-current Father John Misty single to “Sweet Child o’ Mine.” They’ve been swimming against the current since then, yet their latest single “Moving” suggests that their newly announced third album Eternity Chaos was made by a duo that’s become more amenable to forces beyond their control. “‘Moving’ is a song about learning to embrace change and go with the flow and having some sort of self-acceptance/-awareness about how that all impacts my brain,” confirms vocalist Paige Stark.
In true Tashaki Miyaki fashion, such heavy subject matter doesn’t manage to dampen the poolside splendor of the track, which hardly feels removed from the era of West Coast guitar-pop á la La Luz and Dum Dum Girls the band was born within. Likewise, the song’s music video leans into its easygoing quality with a simple day out in LA captured through a nostalgic filter. “I feel like my girlfriends are the constant in my life, so I wanted to make the video a little celebration of female friendship and loosely inspired by some ’90s videos with those themes,” Stark adds. “Just me and my friend Kayla hanging out around LA in the California summer with my sweet foster dog. We decided to shoot in black-and-white Tri-X Super 8 to give it a timeless look.”
Despite the band’s progressive MO, Eternity Chaos was actually recorded in the Glassell Park studio where their earliest recordings were set to tape. The record was also produced by the band alongside their longtime collaborator Joel Jerome, and Jon Brion is listed among the album’s credits.
