FKA twigs continues to bring her signature brand of weirdness, this time in a new concept film/commercial for Google Glass. While it might seem hard to believe that someone as mysterious as twigs would align herself with something as, for lack of a better word, dorky as Google Glass, she actually manages to make the high-tech specs seem like an innovative tool for creative potential (rather than the privacy-invading face computers that they are).
In “#throughglass” (directed by Twigs herself), we see her multitude of cultural references come to life, from krumping to gymnastics, soundtracked to her LP1 cut “Video Girl.” Using Glass’s search tool to look up videos of voguers from the ’80s, twigs hits the floor like a reincarnated Willi Ninja in a flurry of glamorous, dramatic poses, moving with speed and flair from voguing to aggressive krumping. With a quick flick of the wrist, twigs can make a trio of gymnasts with eerie, painted anime eyelids appear, twirling ribbons and twisting about like contortionists.
Whatever your opinions of Google Glass are, it’s hard to deny that when FKA twigs uses them to give us a glimpse inside the inner workings of her style, they become infinitely cooler. Check out the video for yourself.
