Unless you’ve been patrolling the DIY venues of Western Canada, the name Andy Shauf will likely be new to you. Get used to it, though, because the Saskatchewan native is poised to break though in a big way, what with the recent boom of thoughtful singer-songwriters—and also given that both of Shauf’s singles for his upcoming debut on ANTI- (“Jenny Come Home” and “The Magician”) are really something special.
That full-length release—The Party—will arrive in May, and today Shauf has shared a video for “The Magician,” premiered via Stereogum, which is a pretty solid starting point for diving in, if you haven’t taken the plunge yet. The animation is cut-up, just like the spread of his influences—from Neil Young to Randy Newman to Joni Mitchell.
