It’s been a long journey for The Appleseed Cast, who were among the first wave of emo bands coming up in the midwest in the late ’90s. Twenty years later, their sound has wandered in the direction of post rock before delving into the experimental following their signing with Graveface Records a decade ago, the indie label founded by Black Moth Super Rainbow’s Ryan Graveface.

With their first album in over five years, The Fleeting Light of Impermanence, slated for release at the end of the month, the band is sharing the second single, “Chaotic Waves,” today, confirming the new album has more in common with Explosions in the Sky than just a poetic album title. Crashing between the tumultuous ebbs and flows of guitar and percussion, the track’s instrumentals align with the record’s theme of overcoming adversity and finding optimism in a bleak world.

“‘Chaotic Waves’ is about having the courage to break out of complacency,” vocalist Chris Crisci says about the track. “It is about recognizing that the world is turbulent, full of clashes, and that in order to affect it, you have to first engage [with] it. Ultimately, those engagements will be the only thing that lasts.”

The Fleeting Light of Impermanence is out June 28 on Graveface Records. You can pre-order it here.
