I guess we’re all just kind of jaded to the fact that one of the biggest acts in rock, pop, and hip-hop this century is entirely comprised of cartoons voiced by the guy who sings that woo-hoo song they always play at sporting events. But with a new documentary on its way shining light on Damon Albarn’s experimental second life co-creating Gorillaz alongside Jamie Hewlett, there’s plenty of time to meditate on the abnormality of the project.
Helmed by first-time director Denholm Hewlett, Gorillaz: Reject False Icons is a documentation of the project over three years, both in the studio and on an overly ambitious world tour. With appearances from Vince Staples, Jean-Michel Jarre, De La Soul, DRAM, Pusha T, Little Simz, Yasiin Bey, Danny Brown, Ben Mendelson, Kelela, Jehnny Beth, Mavis Staples, Noel Gallagher, and so, so many others, the doc is sure to emphasize the massive impact Gorillaz has had in every imaginable corner of popular culture.
For now, the film is only slated to run one night only, December 16, across over six hundred theaters worldwide. For showtimes, and to see if your country is one of the twenty-seven screening the film, visit the doc’s website.
