Water, the debut record from LA rockers SadGirl, turns one year old next month, and while the band was already in the process of ideating a follow-up, a global pandemic is a reasonable enough excuse to put those plans on hold for the time being. With this small roadblock, though, they figured now may be a good time to unleash a new track from the project, which not only worked as an aquatic-themed sequel to Water, but also felt oddly appropriate for the present moment.
“With all of the shake-ups and cancellations, I felt like the song needed to get out there,” shares vocalist Misha Lindes, introducing the band’s new song “Learn to Swim.” “It seemed too relevant to everything that was going on. I want people to know we’re still here and we’re gonna be here after this has all settled down. Adapt and thrive.”
SadGirl is unveiling the new track with a hazy, melancholy video directed by Owen Summers, which complements the psych-tinged soft-rock lullaby. “I wanted to illustrate my interpretation of the song, using color and texture,” notes Summers. “Looking to emphasize the charm of the hazy melody, I used the character and his strange journey to embody what the song meant to me.”
You can watch the video below now, though the band invites you to revisit the clip at 3 p.m. PST on their Instagram for a more communal viewing.
