Title Fight, “Hyperview”

By far Title Fight’s most melodic album yet, “Hyperview” offers up a whole new side of the group—still aggressive, but in a very different way.

Critical acclaim often eludes heavier, “emo” music; rather than receiving the kudos it deserves, it’s usually dismissed as adolescent angst, unworthy of serious consideration. Sometimes that’s understandable (hello, Fall Out Boy), but there’s a whole breed of punk/hardcore/post-hardcore/etc. bands out there that are transcending the inherently limiting nature of their genres to find well-deserved recognition. Pennsylvania’s Title Fight is one such act, and this third record strays even further from its gruff, but melodic punk roots. The jangly, driven guitars of “Mrahc” fall somewhere between The Smiths and The Cure but with added acerbity, while “Dizzy” is a forlorn, plaintive lament that’s also full of slow-burning rage. By far Title Fight’s most melodic album yet, Hyperview offers up a whole new side of the group—still aggressive, but in a very different way. That doesn’t negate what the band has done before, but you can bet this time many more people will be listening.
