David Byrne Launches Multimedia Project “We Are Not Divided”
The six-week project aims to dispel the popular notion of America’s political division.
In an era where we’re hearing the phrase “more divided than ever” more than ever, David Byrne—Talking Head turned talking head and neighborhood cyclist—has taken it upon himself to present another view on the state of the nation. “We Are Not Divided,” his new project housed under his Reasons to Be Cheerful editorial, aims to spotlight the ways in which our national division isn’t nearly as pronounced as we’ve been led to believe.
“This series is hopeful at a time when that is in short supply,” Byrne shared in a press statement this morning. “I realize the title might come as a shock. Not divided? Are you kidding me? What world are you living in? I am more than a little aware of what’s happening, but the truth is there is evidence that we can find ways to come together––I have to believe that or I would sink into despair. Luckily, there are people and initiatives out there that we can look to for inspiration, and boy do we need it.”
The project will be rolled out over the course of six weeks, beginning today and extending through November 2. It will pair essays and videos about “places and institutions that are succeeding in overcoming division” with illustrations from Byrne himself. Check out the project here.

It’s easy to feel like we’re hopelessly divided. We sometimes feel that way too. So over the past year, we’ve been working on something that’s given us cause for optimism. It’s called We Are Not Divided, a six-week multimedia project exploring the human capacity to overcome division. And we’re launching it today. ⠀ ⠀ From now until November, we’re delving into the many ways we bridge our divides. We’re looking at science, politics, technology, religion, social movements, culture and more. And we’re telling these stories through evidence-driven reporting, multimedia and first-person voices, with the same sense of solutions-focused, healthy optimism that always guides us.⠀ ⠀ We created this project because we feel that these stories need to be shared more than ever — and we’re hoping you’ll help us do just that. So pass it around, share it with your friends. Let’s balance the narrative a little.⠀ ⠀ Speaking of sharing, the illustrations scattered throughout the project were hand-drawn by @davidbyrneofficial. We call them dingbats (the drawings, not David, silly!) We animated a few, and soon you’ll be able to find them for free in our merch store.⠀ ⠀ Look, we know this is a crazy time. And we realize we’ll never all want the same thing. But with this project, we hope to show that by locating the bridges we’ve already built, we can build more of them. ⠀ ⠀ Head to the link in our bio to dive right in. ⠀ ⠀ #WeAreNotDivided is made in collaboration with @guardian, @nextcityorg, @marshallproj, @solutionsjournalism, @thetyee and #FreakonomicsRadio (to name a few).
