In an era where we’re hearing the phrase “more divided than ever” more than ever, David Byrne—Talking Head turned talking head and neighborhood cyclist—has taken it upon himself to present another view on the state of the nation. “We Are Not Divided,” his new project housed under his Reasons to Be Cheerful editorial, aims to spotlight the ways in which our national division isn’t nearly as pronounced as we’ve been led to believe.

“This series is hopeful at a time when that is in short supply,” Byrne shared in a press statement this morning. “I realize the title might come as a shock. Not divided? Are you kidding me? What world are you living in? I am more than a little aware of what’s happening, but the truth is there is evidence that we can find ways to come together––I have to believe that or I would sink into despair. Luckily, there are people and initiatives out there that we can look to for inspiration, and boy do we need it.”

The project will be rolled out over the course of six weeks, beginning today and extending through November 2. It will pair essays and videos about “places and institutions that are succeeding in overcoming division” with illustrations from Byrne himself. Check out the project here.
