Particularly in an era when many of us are making new acquaintances over Zoom calls in e-classrooms and work spaces—and there’s generally very little face-to-face communication—there seems to be a heightening disconnect between the self we present online and the one we act out in person. This is the subject tackled on the latest single from U.S. Girls member Carlyn Bezic’s forthcoming debut album as Jane Inc., Number One. “‘Obliterated’ imagines the moment that the IRL self is overtaken by the online self, leaving a serene melancholy and calm resignation,” she shares of the single.
It’s the final inquisition into modern human interaction on the record, which arrives March 19 on Telephone Explosion, pairing this sense of Matrix-y reality with muted, if not slightly mutated, synth pop. The “serene melancholy and calm resignation” certainly comes through in her cool vocals, with a minimal drum beat and layers of downtempo synths providing a more-than-suitable soundtrack.
