The other day, Saddle Creek released their 16th installment of their Document Series in the form of a 7-inch from Allie Cuva—a.k.a allie—with production from Ryan Hemsworth under the moniker Quarter-Life Crisis. Following allie’s recent album maybe next time, the A-side “cast iron” is an affecting rumination on connection.

Over a soft, sputtering beat, allie details a conversation between two people. “You tell me / God’s here in everything / That’s sweet / Though not a necessity,” she sings. She later opens up a scene for us, one where the natural world proves too astounding to not come from a higher power. “We walk through / Halls of hundred-year-old trees / And I think / I know what you really mean.” The single captures the difference in mindsets between two people: one romantic and the other more pragmatic. Despite their difference in theories, it doesn’t stop them from understanding where the other is coming from. “Oftentimes, there are clearer, more sober ways to represent ourselves, and I’m interested in that journey,” Cuva said in relation to the song.
