As longtime members of Austin’s heavy-psych scene, there are certain expectations for what a Holy Wave single should sound like. Yet rather than emigrating from that certain hazy sound specific to three-figures temperatures as their peers in Night Beats did, or continue to carve into this regional niche as The Black Angels continue to do, Holy Wave are splitting the difference on their latest single “Chaparral,” which plays out like a more contemplative version of the neo-psych and surf-rock sounds the band debuted on Relax, as well as one cobbled together from a wider range of influences outside of their local scene.

Most prominently, though, the track feels inspired by the past—less in a sense unique to the band, and more in the way it feels to reminisce on times gone by. “This song is not just about personal reflection, but also about the idea of digging through the attic,” Kyle Hager confirms. “It's trying to encourage oneself to use the oft-ignored experiences of our past in our future projects and perspectives.”
