Four decades after helping to define the language of alt-rock, Kim Gordon returned to Metro this week still in pursuit of the future of idiosyncratic, noise-driven sound. This insistence on reinvention made for a rare night for the all-ages Chicago crowd: Lifelong devotees who discovered Gordon through her work in Sonic Youth stood shoulder-to-shoulder with younger fans of The Collective and Play Me, who eagerly awaited the green light to mosh.
While there were plenty of nostalgic moments, the set felt aggressively present. The same spirit that demanded more from audiences in the 1980s is still committed to inspiring and challenging listeners at every level. Kim Gordon remains proof that great art will always find new audiences. — MoneyShot4All
